The "Conch Republic" is a festive island of colorful bars and equally colorful characters in what may as well be the tropics. America's southernmost tip, where Harry Truman spent his summers playing poker and running the country, is a non-stop delight. Visit Hemingway's house where you'll find his original manuscripts and many of his famed six-toed cats. And while you're on the island be sure to sample its culinary treasures, such as conch salad and world-famous Key Lime pie.

Cozumel, Mexico

Long before Cancun became a popular destination, Cozumel was well-known as a diving spot and home to the world famous Palancar Reef, which gives divers the opportunity to view thousands of brilliantly colored fish. Non-divers can kick back on a sun-drenched beach, or enjoy any number of seaside activities, such as shopping in colorful marketplaces or dining in an open-air café.

What level will I be on? Will I be near the other Divas?
The goal is to arrange the rooms on the same deck, as close as possible. I'd like to narrow our rooms to Upper/Empress/Verandah decks based on past reviews, amenities, etc. Midship is also preferred, as we'll be central to all activities. I've attached a layout of the cruise ship.

Am I stuck eating at a specific time?
Carnival offers Anytime Dining - we can dine anytime between 5-9;30pm for sit down dinner. We always have the option to enjoy the buffet anytime or room service. Breakfast and lunch options are flexible and of course, you can eat while lounging at the pool ;)

I'm without a roomie, now what?
No worries! Just let me know that you need a hip Diva room assignment. It will be fun!

Long Time, No See

Ok, so has it REALLY been since April that I've last posted?!?!? Ahh - I've missed you all and hopefully you've missed receiving fabulous updates on girlfriend getaway ideas! I must say, life has taken me for quite a bit of a ride lately and while I've dreamed of relaxing, it hasn't always been possible.

BUT you know I'm always on the go! In the past few months, I celebrated Virginia Tourism's 40th anniversary with a kick-off party at Mt. Vernon and trip with 40 winners to a secret destination....mine turned out to be Virginia Beach! Very cool!

Business led me to Argentina and Chile...twice. International travel is always an adventure and provides a fresh way to see the world. Fine wine, hearty meals of beef and sunshine met me on my Latin American journey, as well as a quick run-in with the Chilean customs department over an apple (hey, I say Ipod, they say Apple...I MUST brush up on my Spanish :-)

I visited Detroit for an unexpected trip home. RIP Monte Evans.

Dance recitals and year end school activities took my June by storm. Every year I bang my head against the wall, wondering how I let myself get dragged into the long hours of volunteering, piles of tulle, early morning rehearsals, hair, makeup.....until I see the kids on stage. It's all worth it!

Last but not least, we kicked off the summer with Living La Diva Loca 2009 - Bahamas!! The Bahamas trip deserves its own post but I'll sum it up in a few words: girlfriends, pina coladas, togas, conch fritters and plenty of laughter.

Music for the Flight - The Birth of Corneille

Heading on your girlfriend getaway and need new tunes for your flight or drive? I’ve recently been introduced to a new CD that’s worth a download to your IPod!

The Birth of Corneille is bound the rise the charts in 2009! I’d never heard of Corneille, but learning that the singer, song writer was influenced by the likes of Michael Jackson and Stevie Wonder AND on the Motown record label, I immediately become intrigued (particularly since I’m a Motor City native ;) Originally from Rwanda, Corneille has already earned success in Canada, France and Japan. The Birth of Corneille is his English-language debut.

When I popped the CD in, the first track immediately brought arist, Dwele, to mind, with the bass infused beat and soulful neo-soul sound. As the tracks continue to play, I recalled another Canadian R&B artist, Glenn Lewis, with a similar silky style. Corneille’s smooth and soulful tunes remind me of Dwele, with a slightly less hip-hop edge or a male version of Indie.Arie. My favorites are Track #1 "Love is Good" since it immediately grabs your attention or soothing Track #8 "Home is By You". Corneille’s thoughtful American debut CD, The Birth of Corneille, is definitely an album that you can groove and relax to while in flight!

Learning more about Corneille’s life story certainly made me appreciate his music more. Corneille, born in Germany and raised in Rwanda, developed his interest in music as a child and credits his dad for nurturing his interest. His father actually compared his young sound to Tracy Chapman. Corneille made his first studio recording at 16 and was selected as a finalist in a tv music contest.

In 1994, Corneille’s life was struck by tragedy when his parents and family were killed during Rwanda’s massacre. Although, he dealt with his share of depression and guilt, Corneille is strikingly calm when asked about how his survival has shaped his music. Music helped Corneille overcome his guilt and find comfort in the world. In his music, many of us can find comfort in his tracks about love, the heart and his personal experiences.

Normally, I tend to stray away from cooking while on vacation. Mainly because I’m on well…VACATION! My family, as many of yours, has been forced to cut back on non-essentials over the past year. With grocery costs creeping up and companies laying off, Lord knows I can’t go shoe splurging like I used to. My pedicure visits have been reduced and I’ve learned to perfect Recessionista Fashionista style. Chatting with friends about money woes, I got to thinking (which depending on the day can be a scary task ;) – what’s on my Safe List?

Safe List, you ask??? You know what a Safe List is, although you may call it something else. You’re on a diet but you still “allow” yourself to eat chocolate. Thus, chocolate is on the Safe List. You’ve cut eating out from your budget, but Chinese takeout is acceptable – Chinese food is Safe. I could go and on, but you catch my drift. While myself and many of my friends have become penny pinching divas, we’ve included our Girlfriend Getaway and other vacation adventures on our Safe List. The Safe List brings you comfort and excitement, and while it may be a splurge; it’s appreciated much more, because you’ve saved and waited for it. I don’t know about you but I’m counting down the days until my next vacation. Literally. Counting. Down. The. Days....And I’m willing to postpone a few shopping trips to save up for it.

Regardless of the world around me, I make a point every year to travel with my family, travel alone with my hubby and getaway with girlfriends. The adventures may be extravagant or frugal but the time spent with family and my girlfriends is always special.

Location Spotlight - All-inclusive vs. A la Carte?

Ah, the age-old vacation debate. Do I trap myself into an all-inclusive resort package or choose a great hotel, leaving my meals and incidentals to chance? Just this week I was torn with this decision: all-inclusive Bahamas resort, or try my luck and go a la carte? You see, I’m the Contact Diva with the responsibility of choosing the location for my personal girlfriend getaway and my friends are counting on me for a fabulous package and location recommendation. All for a agreed upon package price in our budget.

Suddenly, I recalled a post I read earlier this month from the LA Times: All-Inclusive Vacations: Not Always, which pointed out hidden charges travelers may pay under the illusion of an all-inclusive getaway, such as transportation to/from hotel, taxes or activities. So, being the analytic that I am, I decided to make a pros and cons listing, from a Diva’s point of view. Take a look at how I made out:

Definite advantages:

Budget friendly! For me and my frugal pals, it’s much easier to plan out the total vacation cost, if all meals, beverages and main activity costs are known upfront.

Alcoholic beverages, including premium liquor cocktails, are usually included – for your “thirsty” friends, this can be a huge cost benefit!

Pay and relax. I love being able to hang out at the resort, relax by the pool, without the need to carry a wallet everywhere I go.

Most times, tips and gratuities are included. It’s so easy to lose track of the dollar bills that you give to the bellman and other hotel staff. Let’s face it, those dollars add up!

From tennis to water aerobics, most activities are included with the package price. Another wallet-friendly perk.

Definite turnoffs:

Depending on the size of the resort, you can become bored with the resort restaurant choices OR you may miss some of the local area culture by eating at the resort exclusively. AGH! As a result, you may end up paying for restaurant meals outside of the resort that you haven’t planned on.

Communication charges. It goes without saying that I’m extremely dependent on the internet. Hidden communication charges burn me up!

Cruises usually tack on 10%+ for gratuity which can certainly put a dent in your budget, if not planned for in advance.

Read the fine print to see if those doggone resort fees are included. Some resorts charge daily fees per person (approx. $15/day) for use of the facilities, bottled water, etc. For a 5-day vacation, you may end up paying $75 in fees, which could be better spent on shoes ;)

Overall, I think all-inclusive is a great option for an affordable, fun vacation. I highly recommend reading the fine print of each resort or cruise website, so that you know exactly what is included with your package. The absolute worst would be being surprised at check-out because of unexpected charges. So what did I choose? Super all-inclusive Breezes Bahamas. And so far, the Divas agree.

It’s been a tough few weeks. I’m sure my stresses are no different than many of you and your girlfriends – family responsibilities, kid duties, stressful work situations, dismal news on every TV station, bailout this and recession that. Seriously, I need a break!!! Just this week, I mentioned to a close girlfriend that I was researching summer vacation trips. She replied “A vacation sounds like heaven right now”, followed with my response “Anytown, USA sounds like heaven right now!”

We don’t all have the time to hop in the car this weekend on a road trip or the funds to catch a last-minute flight to Florida. Anytown, USA is a destination that can be reached with little effort and cash but makes a huge difference for calming your mind and escaping your present zoo life.

- Watch Sex and The City, Will & Grace, Bridget Jones Diary or Legally Blonde. Trust me, the chuckles are well worth it!

- Go shoe shopping and buy a fun pair of pumps

Still torn on the ultimate location for a girlfriend getaway? Look no further than the famous Strip of Las Vegas! Cliché? Perhaps but Vegas truly is an awesome location for a fun, relaxing, party filled weekend!

The main reason why I love Vegas for girl getaways: You can’t help BUT have fun!

There is truly something for everyone in Las Vegas. Obviously, Vegas is well known for gambling in the beautiful, extravagant hotels, but how about your gal pals that would rather spend their cash in places other than the slots? Here are a few non-gambling ideas for a Diva-licious Vegas getaway:

Splurge and stay at the Strip hotel you love (or at least, the nicest you can afford). I’ve had friends go hang out for a weekend in Vegas, only to stay at the cheapest, dinkiest (won’t name any names) hotel. Pick a hotel that mirrors the personality of your group. I love the new Planet Hollywood – it’s swank and of course, has a true Hollywood feel. The Palazzo is new and captured my attention when it opened last year. I’m definitely making a point of checking out their suites – I love the chic, first class atmosphere. The Palazzo is also home to the Canyon Ranch Spa, the most expansive spa in North America – book appointments for you and friends for a signature cocoon wrap, peppermint pedicure or rock-wall climbing.

Eat to your heart’s content. Seriously, now is NOT the time to watch your waistline. One look at the lavish hotel buffets and all diets will be out the window! Visit Paris hotel's Le Village Buffet for Sunday brunch for an amazing meal and conversation. It’s more expensive than most but believe me that it’s well worth the 5-star rating! Another one of my favorites is Jean Philippe Patisserie at the Bellagio. It’s a TEENY café in the center of the hotel and well known for their amazing chocolate displays, gelato and the MUST-try crepes.

Adventure is the name of the game. Sin City is the perfect backdrop for trying out something new and releasing your Inner-Diva ;) Sign your group up for tickets to the sizzling new arrival, Peep Show, a sexy striptease theatre show, told through dance and contemporary music that's performed by an all-female powerhouse band!

Put your friends on center stage and take a Stripper 101 class – with a studio set like a nightclub, women of all ages can learn some pretty hot moves to take back to your significant other. Trust me, it’s a hoot! Be sure to smile pretty for the professional photo, as you aren’t allowed to take photos with your own camera.

Pull an All-Nighter. Yes, I know you typically go to sleep every night right after the 11 o’clock news, but you are in Vegas, baby! One requirement of the ultimate weekend is to stay out (and awake) ALL night, laughing and hanging out with your girlfriends. Whether you are hotel-hopping and taking in the sites, or dancing until you burn a hole in the floor, a weekend in Vegas is not complete until you hang out into the wee hours of the night.

Most importantly, relax. There’s definitely plenty to see and do along the Strip but be sure to carve out some downtime. The hotel pools are beautiful and perfect for laying out with friends, catching up on gossip. For a fun day that will feel like a road trip, have brunch at the House of Blues at THEhotel at Mandalay Bay and then go check out the Mandalay Beach. The world-famous “Beach” is made up of 11 acres, including a wave pool, beach, lazy river and swimming pools, complete with beach chairs and a DJ pumping the hottest tunes. Once you stake out your area, you’ll be there all day! Now, rumor has it that only hotel patrons (or patrons of affiliate hotels) are allowed into the Beach – but I’ve been, simply by “tipping” the gatekeeper ;)

This is really only a snippet of Vegas activities for your girl getaway weekend - the list can go on and on and we haven't even gotten to the shopping! Whether your group is made up of party gals and low-key divas, or a wild combination of both, there’s definitely something for everyone in Vegas....Just remember the Cliché, what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas….

Girl's Night In - Oscar Theme Party

The guys have Super Bowl and NBA All-Star Weekend and divas get the fun stuff - gossip and fashion. The Oscars are right around the corner and you know you’ve been dying to get together with friends – there’s nothing like live commentary and gossip during the show. Gather your friends and make a date for an Oscar Themed Girl’s Night on Sunday, February 22!

Depending on how much time you allow yourself, you can be super fancy or super easy with the invitations. Now me, I’m all about Evite – quick, simple, track your RSVPs online and customizable. Perfecto!

Keep the food simple, yet classy and fun. I’m thinking shrimp cocktail, bbq meatballs, fun dips, truffles and whatever else floats your boat. I recently learned about an amazing girl getaway founded by a woman that visited Costa Rica, fell in love with the location, tried her luck with surfing…and instantly became hooked! Any woman with enough guts to fall in love at first “sight” with Costa Rica and build a business around the beautiful location and surfing, I just had to meet. Here's a peek into the life transforming active escape:

I “met” Tierza Davis, founder of Pura Vida (Pure Life) Adventures, via telephone and while we weren’t able to physically connect, I immediately felt her positive energy and inspiration through the time zones.

Where did the vision for Pura Vida Adventures come from?
In 2002, Tierza, found herself in Costa Rica, on a mission to relax and regroup after her dot.com company went bust. Who’s a typical Pura Vida visitor?
Most women that visit Pura Vida Adventures are busy professionals and visit the retreat not just to unplug from their stressful lives but to try a new activity as well. Tierza says that surfing is one way women can conquer their fear…of basically anything. There are skilled surfing instructors ready to train and guide visitors every step of the way. What’s also cool is while women tend to visit the camp solo, they often meet new friends. One group of 3 solo visitors arrived as strangers and left as traveling buddies, creating their own girlfriend getaways, visiting new places together like Brazil and Dominican Republic.

How does the yoga fit in?
Incorporating yoga into the retreat was a natural fit. Tierza actually instructed yoga for years, well before she became hooked to surfing. While surfing is quite rigorous, yoga provides the perfect balance with focus and stretching. Turns out the woman WAS a call girl, took a liking to my friend and gave us a few....well, let's just call them lessons. Definitely a highlight of the night! LOL

Location Spotlight - Nassau, Bahamas

This year, my traveling crew is headed to sunny Nassau, Bahamas! Why Bahamas, you ask? Because of the sun, the beaches, and most of all, the fun!

Nassau, the capital of the Bahamas, is prized for its historic presence, giving tourists a peek into the 18th century Island. Visitors can visit Victorian mansions, cathedrals and Queen Quarters as well as shop international crafts, perfumes and other luxury items. Now, I’m told that Downtown along Bay Street is bustling with wall-to-wall boutiques, restaurants and clubs - sounds fit for a Diva!

During our previous getaways, we’ve tried our hand at gambling and various sporting adventures (assuming you can call horse-back riding and ATV adventures a sport), and the Bahamas offers both! Crystal Palace Casino is just a skip away and there’s plenty of water sports available, like snorkeling, kayaking and more. Now, I’m not much of a water gal myself, but hey, vacation often brings out an adventurous side in the Divas, so there’s no telling what our weekend getaway will hold ;)

Mostly, our getaway is highly anticipated because of the downtime - Time away from the pressures of the office and family demands. Many of us are spread across the States, so relaxing together along the golden sands of Cable Beach, laying by the pool bar, and catching up on gossip is most likely the way we’ll spend the majority of our time. The countdown officially begins….

How to Plan A Girlfriend Getaway Vacation

Years ago, my best girlfriends and I all turned 30 in the same year. We’d talked about going on a major 30th blowout celebration trip - packing our bags, leaving the husbands, kids and work behind, and just going. Destination Anywhere. Yet, somehow Year 30 came and went, and without our celebration blowout. We let life, kids, jobs and drama get in the way of our “free” and fun time, and let our dream trip pass us by.

Luckily, the vision never died and a few years later, we decided to breathe life into our getaway. Have you been stuck in a rut, unable to REALLY connect with your girlfriends? Stop the excuses and start planning your own 2009 getaway! Planning can be simple and I’ve added a few suggestions based on my experiences below:

Determine who your Core Divas are. Core Divas are the girlfriends whose opinions will be used to create the vacation details, the ones that are definitely down for the trip. This isn’t to say that you won’t invite others to attend your vacation getaway; it simply keeps the opinions down to those with the original vision. During the initial planning stages, it’s also important to know if it’s “allowed” for Core Divas to invite more travelers, once the trip details are confirmed.

From the Core group, choose the Contact Diva. The Contact Diva should be the person that is great with detail, has patience and gets along with everyone in the group. If you don’t have one “lead”, then I strongly suggest delegating responsibilities among the Core Divas, so that none of the planning falls through the cracks.

I’ve found that the very best way to determine where and when to go, as well as how much to spend on your vacation is to survey your Core Divas. I actually use a survey site, Survey Monkey, to gather the responses. It may seem formal to gather responses, but I like the confidentiality and Survey Monkey tracks the percentages of individual responses...so majority rules ;) I include questions such as: "What’s Most Important in a Getaway, Package Price Range for airfare/accommodations, Date Ranges, Trip Location and Desired Activities (i.e. spa, tours, water sports, shopping, etc.)"

Core Divas surveyed and key details determined? Now it’s time to call your favorite Travel Agent with the details! Travel Agents can a great value and resource, especially with planning group trips. I also love working with agents because they are able to find packages that allow for payment plans, so your group doesn’t have to worrying about footing the full package price upfront. The Contact Diva is also a key player here, as it’s much easier for a travel agent to communicate details with one contact person, rather than the entire group of travelers.

**As a side note: if you set up a payment plan with your Travel Agent, it’s SO much easier to have your Travel Agent use one form of payment, rather that several from all of the group members. I highly recommend setting up a PayPal account for the group payments and using the associated PayPay MasterCard for the payments to your Travel Agent. Your Travel Agent should be able to assist you with keeping track of payments from the group.

Once all the details are in place, Get Excited!! I actually create a flyer to send everyone the trip details and to create more excitement. Don’t forget key details such as: When, How Much (include payment plan schedule, if app), Where, and Hotel websites. Also, include the Contact Diva’s contact info if travelers outside of the Core group will be invited.

Add Bells and Whistles. Other perks I add to my getaways to make them fun for the traveling divas:

· Monthly emails with traveling tips, fun info about the vacation destination, and fashion news.
· Swag Bags with traveling essentials. My girlfriends LOVE receiving a “La Diva Loca” trip package, days before we depart. Trip packages can include a novelty from the location you are headed, Peek-A Boob Strips, and a customized party CD. The key is being creative and fun!
· Group t-shirts. I’m not talking about your standard, cheesy screen-print tee. Check out Sparkle Plenty, for a fun, Swarovski crystal t-shirt, designed with your group in mind!

My girlfriends and I have made our trip an annual adventure and it’s something that’s highly anticipated every year! Stop making excuses, grab a girlfriend or two, and start planning your own girlfriend getaway!

SCLC will host its MLK Unity Prayer Breakfast at the L’Enfant Plaza Hotel located at 480 L’Enfant Plaza at 9:30 AM in Washington, DC. This event will also serve as a platform to recognize and pay tribute to many of the organizations and individuals that participated in the 1963 March on Washington. The program, part of the free daily performance series on the Millennium Stage, features the Queen of Soul and 1994 Kennedy Center Honoree Aretha Franklin, hip hop violin duo Nuttin' But Stringz, and the Let Freedom Ring Choir with Music Director Rev. Nolan Williams Jr. Andrea Roane from WUSA Channel 9 hosts as Mistress of Ceremonies. Marian Wright Edelman, the president and founder of the Children's Defense Fund, will be recognized with the 2009 John Thompson "Legacy of a Dream" award.

Free tickets are required. Tickets will be distributed one (1) per person in line on Monday, January 19, 2009, in front of the Concert Hall, beginning at 4 p.m.

National Museum of American History
“Renewing America’s Promise” is the overall theme of free public programs and exhibitions related to the Presidency and First Ladies. Music, gallery talks, book signings and actors portraying presidents and first ladies will be presented in the museum Saturday, Jan. 17, through Monday, Jan. 19.

“First Ladies at the Smithsonian” showcases objects from the nearly century-old collection and displays 14 gowns, including those worn by Martha Washington, Mary Todd Lincoln, Jacqueline Kennedy, Eleanor Roosevelt and Laura Bush. (Three are inaugural gowns worn by Helen Taft, Rosalynn Carter and Laura Bush.) The gallery’s central exhibit features paintings, jewelry, china, personal possessions and other objects from the Smithsonian’s unique first ladies’ collection. A section of the exhibition focuses on the contributions of America’s first ladies and the ways in which they have influenced the most powerful office in the country.

Smithsonian American Art Museum
“The Honor of Your Company Is Requested: President Lincoln’s Inaugural Ball” celebrates President Lincoln’s second inaugural ball, held March 6, 1865, in the historic building that is now the museum’s home. The ball took place as Lincoln’s second term began, when the Civil War was in its final stages, and only six weeks before Lincoln was assassinated. The exhibition features ephemera from the inaugural ball, including the invitation and menu, as well as engravings illustrating the night’s events.

National Portrait Gallery
The latest addition to the National Portrait Gallery is a recent donation—the original artwork for Barack Obama’s “Hope” poster designed by Shepard Fairey. This portrait became the central portrait image for the campaign and was distributed as a limited edition print and as a free download. It will be on view by inauguration day on the Portrait Gallery’s first floor.

Public Programs
“Renewing America’s Promise”—Saturday, Jan. 17-Monday, Jan. 19 Actors and actresses portraying American presidents and first ladies will perform throughout the museum. In addition, there will be gallery talks, music, book signings and interpreters to help visitors appreciate the exhibits. “Jubilee: An African American Celebration”—Sunday, Jan. 18-Tuesday, Jan. 20 The Anacostia Community Museum will present musical performance, readings and presentations in conjunction with the museum’s exhibition also titled “Jubilee.” (The Anacostia Museum is located in southeast Washington, D.C.)

In celebration of President-elect Obama’s Inauguration, the Smithsonian will feature exhibitions and public programs related to the presidency from Saturday, Jan. 17, through Tuesday, Jan. 20. The museums and programs are free and open to the public every day from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., including Inauguration Day. On Jan. 20, the National Museum of American History and the Smithsonian Castle will open early at 8 a.m.

Welcome to 2009 Divas!

2008 is dead and gone but the memories of amazing travel adventures and girlfriend get-togethers still lives on.

During the past year, I had the pleasure of planning another awesome La Diva Loca getaway with friends to Los Cabos, Mexico:

Experienced the grandeur of the Las Vegas' Bellagio with hubby and visited Austin, Texas for the first time. I've had the incredible opportunity of visiting London not once:

but twice, the second time dragging my Mom along with me ;)

And even participated in a few "mini" girlfriend getaways along the way ;)

Despite its challenges, 2008 brought peace, Change and wisdom to learn to prioritize my time so I can spend more time with family and friends. Although I wish I had a crystal ball to look into where 2009 will take me, I know I'll be surrounded by good company, great girlfriends and love. Where will you go in 2009?

This holiday season, we took time out from the hectic holiday season, and invited 3 classmates over for her sort-of annual holiday sleepover. Crafts, fashion show, baking and much....much chatter. This year we added a twist and lucked up on The North Pole - a neighborhood house that goes ALL out with holiday decor, complete with a visit from Santa and his Elves.

London Bridges: Mom-Daughter Getaway

My recent mom-daughter getaway in London was fabulous! I won’t bore you with the details of my work happenings for the first few days I was there, trust me, there were enough boring details of tax rules and accounting laws for all of us ;) I got in on Tuesday morning, headed straight to tax classes (yippie) and went non-stop until Friday afternoon. Mom arrived on Thursday, so once she adjusted to the time zone (just in time for my last Friday session), we hit the streets of London! Friday:
As I mentioned, I had a few meetings left at the office but Mom was ready to sightsee. We walked together to my office and she ventured on her own for breakfast and city photos. On your own getaway, it’s important to remember that it’s OK to separate! Many times, you’ll learn more about the city when you are forced to venture alone, and let’s face it, not everyone will always want to see the same sights. Mom took advantage of the alone time and visited St. Paul’s Cathedral, which is actually right across the street from my office. I’ve passed by the Cathedral many times and it took Mom to visit once to learn that this is the church where Lady Diana and Prince Charles were married. Way cool!

After my meetings, we headed straight to Oxford Street! Oxford Street is the busiest shopping area in London. Picture New York’s Time Square on steroids – there were people and shops everywhere. The one thing I love about London, there are many familiar stores that are in the States, so you never feel TOO much like a fish out of water. For example, there are plenty of English and European based shops on Oxford Street, such as French Connection or Harrod's, but you look up and there’s Gap or Nike and you feel at home. We landed in Primark, a discount shopper’s dream. Women stock up on fashion basics and trendy pieces at Primark – I got tights for 2 pounds, sweaters for 8 pounds...and could have gotten cool skinny jeans if I were brave enough to try them on. Apparently they have the best prices in lingerie in town but the dressing room lines…oh, the lines. Shopping overseas can pose an issue, as the sizing is different and you don’t have the option to return. Despite the “too crowded dressing room”, we did an appropriate amount of damage….as did the other tons of women with bags and bags of trendy finds :) Luckily, the dollar is SLIGHTLY better against the pound than it was earlier in the year.

Saturday:
Up and at ‘em! We had 3 goals for the day – visit the Borough Markets for breakfast, shop at a London street/flea market (we chose Camden Market) and don’t be late for our 7:30 theatre show of Wicked. We are professional tourists, so we accomplished it all ;)

Borough Market is an outdoor “foodie” paradise. Anything you can think of: meats, seafood, breads, cheese and wine…and everything in between, can be found here, supplied by local vendors. We sampled hot, mulled wine (yes, on a Saturday morning), caramel fudge, sausages, and for curiosity, a Bacon, Cheese, and Bubble Bap. We saw signs for Bubble and Bap combinations at cafes everywhere throughout the market, so we figured, when in Rome, do as the Romans do….or something like that. Here’s another tip – don’t be afraid to eat as the locals eat., as it will give you the best idea of what the local culture is like. So what’s a Bacon, Cheese, Bubble Bap, you ask? Bacon = thick cut, bacon, salty, really more like country ham. Cheese = thin cut parmesan-type of cheese, Bubble = potatoes cooked with cabbage….and all that goes on a Bap, which is similar to a kaiser roll, and it’s intended to eat as you walk around the market. Not a bad combination, quite tasty and filling actually.

Off to Camden Markets. One thing I should mention, London has a great underground subway system (affectionately called “the Tube”) which is probably the most inexpensive way to get around town and has stops near pretty much everything. So we tubed it to the popular Camden area. Now, I’ve read about Camden and have seen photos but nothing prepared us for the crowd and excitement we found after we hit the street. Camden is a historic former timber yard, established in the 1970's for young artists to be exposed to the public. It's geared towards the music, youth culture. The area spans for blocks and has everything from vintage and gothic fashion to household items (rugs, décor, candles), jewelry and the famous CyberDog. Only photos or video would offer the best description of our CyberDog visit but no cameras allowed, as we were quickly told by security when I whipped mine out :) Just picture a dark clothing store, with neon, glow-in-the-dark punk clothes that reminded us of the Jetsons. Camden also has its fair share of food vendors – any cuisine you have a taste for can be found here. We didn’t do any outrageous shopping but the area was perfect for people watching.

All the Camden Market excitement wore us out, so we headed back to the hotel area for Fish and Chips. Most pubs offer lunch of fish and chips (many actually claim to have the most famous fish and chips :)), so it’s not hard to find one that serves up the popular lunch.

Saturday night consisted of our London theater experience – Wicked was the highlight of my trip. Wicked: The Untold Story of the Witches of Oz, the story based on the “behind the scenes” and childhood of the Wizard of Oz witches was awesome. I’d never read the book but the production is so well put together that you don’t need to have read it. Mom and I picked up program books and tees. It was so good, that I’d actually see it again. I purchased tickets in advance but if you aren’t choosy about seeing a particular show, Leicester Square's tkts booth sells day-of bargains for most of London's hottest shows.

Sunday:
EARLY morning up for our tour. Almost a little too early for us to be on vacation but we were determined to see as much as possible during our getaway weekend. Again, we tube it over to where I think the tour is supposed to depart. Keyword is THINK. I got mixed up with Victoria tube Station and Victoria Coach Station, i.e. the bus station… 7 blocks away. And it’s started to snow….no worries. Victoria Coach Station reminds me of a cleaner Penn Station in NY…minus the public restrooms that cost to use :) We venture and find our tour’s departure gate – attitude and flexibility are essential when traveling in a new place. The tour didn’t seem as organized as I’d have expected of a “luxury” tour, but we had fun, nonetheless. In hindsight, I recommend NOT doing a Sunday tour, if Royal destinations are the highlight. (I’d also recommend not doing a walking tour in the cold and rain :) In London, Sundays are centered around church services, so we weren’t able to tour the insides of many of the buildings, the Changing of the Guard is more sporadic on Sundays, and shops are required to close by 6pm. BUT we did sneak a peek at the Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace, learn a bit of Royal history and have a fab meal at Hard Rock Café. Despite the snow, rain and slightly unorganized tour, it was a great last day.

Monday:
Another EARLY morning up to catch our flight home. Traveling overseas is great but after a week of being in a different time zone, we’re both ready to see family and eat American food. Our flight leaves at 8:50am, so we reserved a taxi at 6am, to arrive at the airport by 7am with time to shop in the duty free shops.
5:55am – checkout and wait in hotel lobby
6:00am – no reserved cab
6:10am – lobby receptionist doesn’t show reservation. Nice.
6:15am – cab arrives. Drives us to Paddington Station, to pick up Heathrow Express train.
6:45am – depart on Heathrow Express. Note: Express. (15 minutes, we should be at terminal)
7:05am – “Express” train slows and comes to halt. They have detected a trespasser on the train tracks. WTF??
7:20am – Express doesn’t stop at Terminal 4. Look up our Terminal…Terminal 4. Must wait for another shuttle.
7:35am – Arrive at terminal. Yay! Only my boarding pass doesn’t print…we’re scheduled to board at 7:50am. Clerk helps me print pass.
7:45am – At counter to check luggage. Of course, my bag is too heavy. Whip out credit card, only cannot pay at counter. Must pay at “cashier”, way on other end. Clerk slowly handwrites a few receipts. No worries.
7:55am – Cheery cashier, rips up my 10-minute-to-print boarding pass and proceeds to handwrite several receipts for my baggage fee. She must have missed that we have already started boarding AND I still need time to duty-free shop.
8:15am – Finally cleared security and they are doing last call for boarding. Quickly purchase a few “souvenirs” for hubby and hop on plane!

London Bridges: Mom and Daughter Style

I'm headed back to London for business mixed with pleasure - this time my Mom will be joining me for a weekend fit for an English Diva ;) The cool thing about traveling with Mom, rather than hubby (no offense) is we can do all the tours and sightseeing that may be too "cheesy" for men. We can eat...or not. Sleep...or not. And of course, the shopping and people watching is way better when shared with another diva!

Obama Inauguration Travel Plans: Getting There

Fellow Divas - There's no doubt that many of us will be traveling to the Nation's Capital for President-elect Barack Obama's Inauguration celebration on January 20, 2009. Since I'm in the heart of DC Metro and have been getting tons of info already regarding the historic event, I figured I'd share everything I find to make your travels to and within DC easier. I'm still in awe of the history made on Nov. 4 and there's no doubt, Jan. 20 will be the largest historical event of the decade!

PLANNING TIPS
Getting to DC

While it may seem obvious, if you haven't booked airfare for Inauguration weekend, do so ASAP! With the hype surrounding this weekend coupled with the holiday season, rates are bound to sky rocket. Book your flights NOW! The closest airport to Washington, DC is Ronald Reagan National (DCA) but depending on the rates, Dulles International Airport (IAD) or Baltimore-Washington International (BWI) are also close enough for them to be an option.

Train is great if you are on the East Coast - if you are in NYC or Philly, the Acela Express is a breeze.

Car - either yours or a rental, driving may be the most affordable, especially if the low gas prices hold. Driving is actually perfect if you plan to bring the whole family and need to cut back on the expense of flights.

Bus - there are PLENTY of churches and organizations planning bus trips. Keep your ears peeled for one being organized in your city. Try Inauguration Road Trip's super cool Road Trip for Change website to connect with transportation from all major cities.

Metro - DC's underground train system will be the best way to transfer in/out of the city for all Inauguration events. Buy or load your SmartTrip tickets early to avoid the lines! Info on using DC's Metrorail system can be found on About.com

Hotel/Lodging
Hotels - By the time you read this, every hotel in DC and 25 miles out is sold out....or too expensive to even consider. If you are lucky enough to find something "affordable", book it ASAP! Do I need tickets to attend the swearing ceremony?

To be seated in the "official" ceremony section, you need to contact your local Congress member for tickets and they are distributed a week before the event. However, there will be plenty of "non-ticket" space for the public to view, with bleechers and big screen televisions for families to watch. Don't be fooled into buying tickets - see important notice from The Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies (JCCIC) below:

The Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies (JCCIC) has issued the following information regarding the availability of tickets for the 56th Presidential Inaugural Ceremony on January 20, 2009:

Tickets to the 56th Inaugural Ceremonies will be provided free of charge and distributed through Members of the 111th Congress. The Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies does not provide tickets to the public. Members of the public interested in attending the Inaugural Ceremonies should contact their Member of Congress or U.S. Senators to request tickets.

The public should also be aware that no website or other ticket outlet actually has inaugural swearing-in tickets to sell, regardless of what they may claim. Tickets will not be distributed to Congressional offices until the week before the inauguration and will require in-person pick-up.

'Any website or ticket broker claiming that they have inaugural tickets is simply not telling the truth,' said Howard Gantman, Staff Director for the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies. 'Tickets for the swearing-in of President-elect are all provided through members of Congress, and the President-elect and Vice President-elect through the Presidential Inaugural Committee. We urge the public to view any offers of tickets for sale with great skepticism.'"

Those who come to witness the swearing-in ceremony will be able to watch and listen to the ceremony on large screens that will be set up along the National Mall.

Inaugural Balls

There are several balls that take place during the week. Of course, the biggest is the President Ball at Washington DC Convention Center i.e. the hardest to get tickets for, even for the savviest of divas ;) Don't fret - many States and organizations have balls that are open to the public.

For F*R*E*E and being in place at the crack of dawn, everyone can attend the Parade! President Obama, First Lady Michelle and a host of family, military regiments, marching bands, etc. will stroll down Pennsylvania Avenue! BE CAREFUL PURCHASING ANY TICKETS ONLINE, most of the sites are taking advantage of the hype.

Traveling to the polls: Tips for the long wait

I made my way to the polls this weekend to early vote in Virginia. I figured I’d have a long wait, 4 hours to be exact, so I prepared myself with a fully charged Ipod, comfortable shoes, magazine and a great attitude. 4 hours IS a long time to wait in line but honestly, I’d have waited longer -very few moments like this arise to change the course of history.

If you haven’t already voted, I urge you to take time on Tuesday, Nov. 4 to do so. Prepare for a wait – this election has drawn crowds like none other and tomorrow is sure to bring record turnouts! I got a list of tips this morning from ColorOfChange.org on making your day at the polls a party. I love the idea of turning your poll line wait into a party, so thought I’d share:

How to Start a Party at the Polls
You can do this while you're waiting in line yourself, you can come back after you've voted, or you can go to other polling places in your area where you hear there are long lines. Here are some ways you can make the wait easier and more fun for voters:

Bring water, food, snacks. A lot of people might not have realized how long they'd have to wait. A little food and water can help give people the energy they need to power through. Cook something the night before, buy some bottled water to share. Healthy snacks are good, but you can also use the opportunity to get rid of extra Halloween candy.

Bring some folding chairs. Some people may need a break from standing; you can give them somewhere to sit.

Rain? Bring umbrellas, ponchos, plastic bags. Help people stay dry.

Tell jokes, juggle, provide some other kind of entertainment. Are you a comedian, dancer, or street performer of some kind? Put on a show! Make sure it's family-friendly.

Play some music or bring a boombox. Play an instrument? Bring it to the polls and play some songs. Bring a boombox. Take requests. Avoid music that might be offensive or abrasive to some people. Keep in mind that not everyone may like your music, so pay attention to how people are reacting; you don't want to drive anyone away.

Be prepared to cover up campaign t-shirts, buttons, etc. Some places have rules against campaigning within 100 feet of the polls. Wearing a t-shirt or button can be considered a form of campaigning, so if you're wearing gear from a particular candidate, be prepared to cover it up or change into different clothes if someone asks you to.

Above all, have fun, and spread it around. Help everyone out, not just people supporting your candidate. This is about making sure everyone has the right to vote. Voters disagree on many issues, but we should all be able to agree that participation in our democracy is an exciting thing. Help bring a festive spirit to the polling place.

Mandarin Update: Off to the Gaylord National

Quick update on my hotel test run project. You remember, I needed to test out a few hotels for office guests in from overseas - I promptly made my reservation at the lavish Mandarin Oriental hotel for me, hubby and the kids....NOT! After getting excited about the free hotel stay and my Cherry Blossom Ritual massage reservation, I find out that the hotel has a STRICT policy on kids staying in the room. Obviously, they don't factor in families with twins +1, because the Mandarin only allows 2 kids per guest room. Repeat - if you are traveling with kids, only 2 kids allowed (or else pay for another room). Bummer!

So I passed the Mandarin project off to our assistant, "K" - she quickly accepted my Cherry Blossom massage and enjoyed 3 nights at the 5-star hotel. I even tortured myself by dropping her off to check-in. The lobby is grand and screams 5-star excellence. "K" fully documented her stay: from the plush king size bed, LCD TV in the bathroom, perfect view of the city and turn down service that includes hot chocolate chip cookies and fresh berries (they had me at hello), she says that the Mandarin Oriental won't disappoint. Even at a whopping $500+ a night, she swears the service is worth it. I guess hubby and I will have to travel there minus kids.

In the Company of Friends: BlogHer DC Reach Out Tour 2008

Picture it – a day away from the office and kids. The smell of Starbucks coffee, yummy breakfast croissants and fruit. A room of sponsors and giveaways. The sound of women buzzing about anything from kids, weight loss, mid-life, html codes, and politics. And best of all, the sweet sound of laptop keyboards….sound like heaven? Almost – BlogHer DC was planned as a blogosphere heaven, with the woman blogger in mind. Monica, with Urban Charm Chat, and I spent an amazing day in the company of internet friends. The BlogHer DC Reach Tour was a one day conference designed to inspire and motivate women bloggers by offering training, technical support and encouragement. In addition to the seminars, with topics ranging from: “Blogging Basics”, “Steps to Personalize, Polish and Promote Your Blog” to “Building your Blog for a Cause”, bloggers were given the opportunity to network during a quasi Speed-Dating icebreaker and freely ask questions from blogging pros throughout the day. The conference was perfect for a newbie blogger, as well as the expert.

During the day, I met a diverse group of women whose blogging experience ranged, yet all were valuable in offering new ideas. Rachel Rappaport, with Coconut and Lime, gave me awesome tips on staying organized, Karen Batchelor with Midlife’s a Trip, gave me encouragement to find my “voice” through blogging and De in DC with A Spiced Life, gave me the creative spark to bring cool business cards to an event!

I was excited to come home, browse the business cards from the incredible women I met and dig through my swag from the day. All in all, I’d say it was a day, well spent ;)

Hotel Test Run

So get this…my boss has several guests visiting our office from other countries (apparently visitors think our office is the best thing since sliced bread), and he’s burnt out from the nearby hotels in walking distance that we usually have guests stay, so he wants me and my coworker to “test” a few upscale hotels to see if they are up to par for the Head Dudes traveling in from overseas. Are you serious?? My assignment is to try a few hotels in Washington, DC, staying long enough to cover both a weekend and weekday, order room service and try out various hotel amenities….for free. Say what?!

So my first assignment is (no, I didn’t choose, my boss did) the Mandarin Oriental located in Southwest Washington, DC. I’ve only heard rumors about the luxury hotel and all have been fabulous. I made reservations for this weekend for hubby and the kids (why not share the fun).

Described as grand elegance within walking distance of Washington DC’s best sights, and ranked one of the top 100 hotels in the world, this 5 star hotel is sure to please, as least I hope.

Stay tuned for my adventure – after detailed review of the website and spa booking, I trust I won’t be disappointed!

When I not traveling or trapped at the office, I love to just CHILL and flip through magazines and catalogs. Last week, I received my cherished Sephora fall catalog in the mail and Oh My! I came across quite a few definite must haves that are perfect for jet setting divas.

Now it’s the guy’s turn to getaway from the Rat Race for a custom made man-cation. Hubby just couldn’t stand the divas having all the fun, so he and his friends are heading to sunny San Juan, Puerto Rico (with my planning assistance of course ;) He calls it "El Caballero Fiesta", roughly translated as an exclusive gentleman's only party!

San Juan is an awesome vacation spot because it offers wonderful weather, water sports, golfing, and electrifying nightlife! So even though the men are headed there, it's still been on my radar for a future Diva getaway! I am, however, in the midst of planning a London getaway with my Mom (taking advantage of another work trip), a Mother's Day Vegas adventure and of course, the 2009 La Diva Loca trip! I'm still torn on location ideas for the Diva trip, so any ideas for a groovy girlfriend getaway, send them my way ;)

Finally a run down on the Divas adventure in Los Cabos and to say that we had a blast in Mexico would be the understatement of the year! For those that weren’t there you will feel the Mexican air blow through your hair and be able to see the palm trees...

Once we touchdown in Mexico, the hundred degree weather hits us like a sauna as we walk down the plane steps and straight to customs before retrieving our bags after the long flight. Getting into the country is complicated mainly because of all the forms you have to fill out. They ask for everything but your precious fingerprints.

One thing about Mexico I must tell you is it is all about the hustle. So after getting through customs and grabbing our luggage, we were escorted into a big space before we were even allowed to go outside, where they jump on you like a cowboy jumps on a horse! Even though we already had ground transportation to the resort and have told the “transportation reps” this several times, they are extremely aggressive in asking what hotel you going to (I guess everyone has to have a hustle). The trick is to just walk away and then go outside where there is an even bigger crowd of reps…..and you are supposed to trust that they will drive you safely to your destination. Off we go!

Ahhh….The Intercontinental Presidente. We are promptly greeted and because of our fabulous “Diva” skills we were all upgraded to ocean view rooms and got VIP wristbands…..now, don’t ask me what that means because even the lady at the front desk could not explain the difference in the arm bands she just said it was better than the others ;)

As we stepped into our room it is what you imagined a Mexican paradise would be and stepping on the balcony just confirmed it! Our room overlooked the crystal clear pools, gorgeous palm trees and ocean. What more could a girl want! Alright so enough of the scenery – everyone’s checked in and settled, so we head to the poolside bar – if you see Jorge, give him a shout out for us!

Day Two:
Now that we were all rested, the group met at the breakfast buffet to decide our activities for the trip. We knew we wanted to go ATV riding and on the glass bottom boat so we stopped by the concierge desk for reservations, only for our youngest Diva to get bamboozled into sitting through a time share presentation with the promise of getting all of our excursions at a deep discount. (For the timeshare presentation, you had to be single and K was the only one to fit the bill….she has vowed to get married soon so that won’t happen again ;). But FREE party cruise tickets in downtown Cabo and crazy cheap ATV and horseback riding….we couldn’t turn it down! Poolside chilling, horseback riding and an adventure to a downtown San Jose martini bar, Day 2 was complete.

Day Three:
We awaken at the crack of dawn to go on our ATV sand dune adventure….although not all of us participated because a few didn’t want to get dirty (such divas). Actually getting to the sand was an adventure in itself because we had to ride the ATV’s in the road alongside regular car traffic! Then with a few of us driving on the wrong side of the road and V’s bike kept breaking down, the adventure started long before we even got to the dunes. Our tour guide, Manny, was great! We went though very narrow paths and got bumped by trees along the way but he was awesome in keeping us focused and excited. Some of us even got bold enough to try “wheelies” on the beach :) On our way back, again we are riding in the street with regular traffic but it is the “rush hour” with even more cars on the road….definitely a risk for amateur diva drivers. So risky in fact, that the cops pulled our whole brigade over and forced us to wait for the heavy traffic to go past before we could proceed. I swear we saw our lives flash and questioned our sanity for even signing up on the tour, however, we all agreed it was a blast!

Our last night and we head to downtown Cabo for shopping and the party boat ride. Shopping was interesting because you would think things would be cheaper in Mexico but like I said everyone needs a hustle and that is exactly what all those shop owners were doing, hustling. If you like tequila, downtown is definitely the place – they give out free samples in “tequila boutiques” across town…so needless to say, we were partying before we even hit the boat :)

Once we arrived on the glass bottom party boat and were rolling, life was perfect. The boat crew served fabulous margaritas and homemade guacamole, chips, salsa, and peanuts (not sure how peanuts fit into the menu, but maybe that’s how they do it in Mexico). We had adopted a Mississippi fan who looked like the detective dude on Law & Order: Criminal Intent. Mississippi was very nice until he kept talking and drinking, which led to more talking and eventually a rum and Coke spill all over one of the Divas. Not only did the rum and Coke make him talk (slur) nonstop, but it turned him into a dancing machine and boy you should have seen this southern boy go! Everything was perfect until we hit a sour note when our 3 hour party turned into a 4 hour buzz kill - the tide kept taking us further and further away from shore and the crew had a tough time bringing us back. Cold, hungry and a few margaritas too many, we were excited to finally see land!

Takeoff:
Leaving the resort is bittersweet because we needed to say goodbye to our mini paradise and mostly, our girlfriends. Sleepy, tired with super early flights, our “paradise” is abruptly halted when our flights are either cancelled or delayed. Cabos airport is the only airport I know that doesn’t have air conditioning, limited food service and NO amenities. It was a hundred degrees, at least, and with our flights continuously delaying, many of us debated the idea of staying in Mexico another night. Finally, we are called to board! Guess who we see boarding our flight…. Mississippi from the party boat! He apparently was so wasted after the party boat ride that he slept on the street in downtown.

After countless hours of travel, delays, and time zone adjustments, we all finally landed…some of us as late as 2am. Despite the soreness from the horseback riding, Mississippi’s spilled drinks and airport drama, we all agreed the getaway was fabulous! Who knows where 2009 will lead the Divas….perhaps coming soon to a state or country near you!

Sometimes, enough is enough...and I'm starting to get to the point where enough is enough. I've been on the road non-stop for the past 3 weeks - Detroit, Mexico. Miami and now Vegas. But who can pass up a company paid trip to Las Vegas, with accomodations at the grand Bellagio!! My bags are packed, Ipod charged and magazines stashed...off I go again!

Once I am able to sit longer than 5 minutes, photos from the past few adventures will be posted - I promise!

Headed to Mexico soon? Here are a few Frequently Asked Questions about Mexico in general and Cabos!

Where is Cabo San Lucas?
Cabo San Lucas is located at the southern tip of the Baja Peninsula in the State of Baja California Sur. Cabo is approximately 1,000 miles south of San Diego, California, 10 degrees below the Tropic of Cancer at a latitude of approximately 22 degrees. Cabo San Lucas is approximately 20 miles southwest of the Los Cabos International Airport.

What time zone is Los Cabos in and does the time change with daylight savings time?
Los Cabos and Baja California Sur are located within the Mountain Time Zone. The time changes here whenever Daylight Savings Time changes.

What will the weather be like in Los Cabos?
Most of the year Los Cabos is warm and sunny, with an average temperature of 78 degrees F., or 26 degrees C. Occasional rains fall in the stormier months from August to October. Winters are cooler and nights can be chilly on the water. Late summer is hot, with temperatures in the high 90s F., and warm nights.

Will I be able to use my credit cards? Can I get cash from the banks with my credit cards?
Answer: Yes, to both questions. All major credit cards (except Discover) are widely accepted. In restaurants, it is best to ask before ordering, not every business accepts credit cards, just as back home. All of the banks will give cash advances, most have ATM machines at their locations, for after hours cash.

Currency and money matters...The peso is Mexico's official currency, but almost all purchases can be paid in US dollars with change in pesos. Dollars are accepted almost everywhere, however large bills can be difficult to break. It's a good idea to bring along plenty of $1's, $5's, and $10's or use ATMs. If you go on an adventure out of the main tourist areas, take small denominations of pesos. Before traveling to Los Cabos, we suggest you have $100 US in small bills for tips and unexpected expenses, etc.

Are there dress codes, and how late will I be staying out?
The dress code is casual, some clubs do not accept sandals, tank tops or shorts, but generally anything goes, as long as you are wearing shoes! You can stay up as late as 5 am in some bars in Cabo San Lucas, known as the party capital of Mexico.

Will my hair dryer (portable iron, electric toothbrush, etc.) work in México?
Answer:
Yes, if you are from the U.S. or Canada. México uses the same voltage as the United States. If you are coming from Europe, or any country that uses 220 volts, you will need the proper adapters.

Will my cellular phone work in Mexico?
Answer: We have local cellular service. Some (very few) cellular services will allow you to roam in Mexico. Most cell phones will work, but they must be reprogrammed by the local service provider (Baja Celular or Telcel). Remember to have it reprogrammed again before returning to the U.S.

Can I drink the water?
Answer: In the hotels and most restaurants, you will get purified water. I would not drink the water from a private home or condo, unless you know there is a purification system installed. The water here is very pure, but the distribution system is not so perfect. Buy bottled water. Why not be completely safe!

Part of the fun of going away with girlfriends is the anticipation – anticipation of relaxing, endless laughter and inside jokes btwn friends. This year is sure to be no different. The Divas will take Los Cabos by storm in just over a month. Our getaways have no rules, except for everyone to come with an open, pleasant mind ready to par-tay! Because we often have “newbies” that join the group, I plan a few package “excursions” to get everyone involved and as a way for us to bond/get to know each other.

WARNING: Wear clothes you don't mind getting dirty, 'cause you even find sand in your underwear. Also, cover your camera with a towel, even in a backpack; it got dirty. We framed our group pictures that we took at some of the scenic spots--make sure you take one. This was everyone's favorite part of the vacation!”

Other than our planned excursions, the “PLAN” is to relax, forget about our worries we left behind the States, eat without restrictions and party!

NYC and Sex & The City

Spring is always a great time to plan a quick weekend getaway to New York! I love the hustle of the city, culture and numerous options for entertainment - perfect for a Mom-Daughter or BFF getaway!

2 full days is all you need for packing in a Broadway show, power shopping and a little rest. One other NY "Must" is the Sex and The City tour, hosted by On Location Tours. Even if you aren't a SATC fan, you're bound to become one after this tour! One of the best NY tours that I've done, for $42, the tour includes stops at the SATC "hotspots", such as The Pleasure Chest (where Charlotte bought her rabbit), Carrie's apartment, and other cool locations. Low Cost Mini-Breaks

One thing I know about men, is that they ALWAYS make time for themselves. Whether it’s signing up a basketball league, scheduling monthly golf rounds or watching the game with friends, men never seem too “busy” to make time for themselves. Women on the other hand (at least most that I know), make up a zillion excuses why we “can’t” make time for ourselves…kids, job demands, budget tight, etc, etc, etc.

Now, with gas prices hitting records highs (since when is $3.09/gallon at Costco considered cheap gas???) and airfare prices hitting the roof, going on a simple roadtrip or weekend getaway may be too costly. Here are a few ideas for getting your Queen Bee time in, without breaking the bank:

1. Book a night or two in your own city’s downtown area. Check out the ultra-trendy, Kimpton Hotel chain. Definitely created to make the everyday traveler feel like a VIP, each hotel has a variety of themed suites and packages, perfect for a fabulous night out with friends! Tour 1 (Voices and Visions in Exile) goes through the Latin Quarter and St.Germain-des-Pres neighborhoods, retracing the challenging and victorious experiences of African-American expatriates Richard Wright, James Baldwin, Chester Himes and William Gardner Smith. Tour 2 (the Entertainers) You will relive Montmarte of the 1920s and 1930s that vibrated with African art and surrealism, decadence and scandal, golden voices and magic music. Tour 3 (Africa in Paris) is a vibrant witness to the co-habitation of Black and Arabic Africa.

You will hear and see how African and French cultures have entwined on social, artistic and political levels since the mid-1800s. You will leave Paris with enough French history to give you a well rounded picture of the times and circumstances.

London Bridges

I'm back from London - it was a quick, whirlwind trip but fun nonetheless! Here are a few highlights:

Wednesday:

-Arrive in London during the afternoon and score a f-r-e-e facial and massage in the Business Club World lounge!

- Exchange my US Dollars for British Pounds. I gave the clerk $600 and why did I get less than 275 pounds in return?!?

-Get lost walking to hotel.

-Still lost walking to hotel. Do they not believe in street signs in London?!?!

-Work, rest, work - BORING ;)

-Meet coworkers for low-key dinner at local Thai restaurant near the London Bridge.

Thursday:

-Wake up dragging. I guess the time difference caught up with me.

-Work Hard.

-Play Hard. Me and my coworkershead to hot-spot Guanabara, a Brazilian club and restaurant near Covent Garden. The website listed over 10 varieties of Mojitos and tons more of the authentic fruit cocktail, Caipirinha, so we knew were in for a good time. My UK coworkers visit at least 1x a month, so they knew exactly what to order. I was a little leery at first because the outside of the club looks like a warehouse and we had to be searched going in, but once we got seated on the wooden picnic tables and the cocktails and Brazilian appetizers started flowing, it was good night for all! The club has free Samba lessons and a live band on Thursday, so watching the locals party was comedy in itself. London's appreciation of different cultures is amazing - they don't see color or race. All ages and races were out on the dance floor, having a ball!

After Guanabara, we walked a few blocks to another "pub" for a more quiet setting for conversation and "pints" (Pints = beer). After one mojito too many, I'm strictly water at this point ;)

Friday:

-Wake up DRAAAAGGGGING. Definitely one mojito too many.

-Work not so hard. We've pretty much wrapped up our meetings at noon, so I spent most of my day reading CNN's website and political blogs, counting down the minutes until my coworkers' flights leave.

- Coworkers leave and I take a cab back to hotel. Yippie!

- Meet up with a friend, that's been living in London for 4 years. She brought her London-local friend/tour guide and we hopped on the tube for dinner, sights and adventure. Of all places for us to find to eat, we luck upon "The Texas Embassy", where we enjoyed American style Tex-Mex. After days of "foreign" food, it was good to read a familiar menu! The chips and guacamole were tasty.

After dinner, we headed over to Picadilly Circus and Leicester Square, so we could people watch and pick up a few souvenirs. Downtown London definitely reminds me of New York in every way - diverse culture, bright lights, crowds and cabs everywhere.

- Cold and sleepy, I head back to the hotel to pack before my Saturday morning flight. Somehow the cold, and long walk and tube-ride make me hungry, so I call the front desk to order room service. NO room service at this hotel. WHAT!?!?! Oh well - I'm just hungry enough to walk upstairs to the hotel restaurant ;)

Saturday:

- I take a cab ride over to Paddington Station to catch the Heathrow Airport Express train. I feels weird driving on the "wrong" side of the road. Picture Union Station in Washington, DC and that's what Paddington Station feels like.

- Spot a familiar sign, Krispy Kreme, at train station! I must buy one to see if they taste the same. I decide to save it and eat it on the train ride to the airport.

- Get settled on train and go to grab my donut....but it's gone?!?!? I am greedy enough to actually get OFF the train to see if my donut bag fell out along my walk....NO donut. Oh well :(

- My plane ride back was fantastic and relaxing. I finished up my book, Confessions of a Shopaholic, watched Michael Clayton and Juno, and plenty of sitcoms. I'll admit though, that after reading, 2 movies, 2 sitcoms AND a nap, and still hours remain until landing time, I get pretty restless. Champagne please, so I can fall asleep! Uh-oh, I spill my 2nd glass of champagne all over my seat and pants. $%&(*@*$!!!

- Home Sweet Home to hubby and the kids.
